Abstract: The genesis of Brazilian organ-making has always been attributed, by musicologists, to the Pernambuco organ-builder Agostinho Rodrigues Leite, who built excellent organs throughout colonial Brazil. However, several documents from the 18th century prove the true history of Brazilian organ-making, as well as the existence of the first great pipe organs.
