This is a remarkable academic dissertation work authored by the Portuguese trumpeter João Miguel Pereira Milheiro, carried out at the University of Aveiro, in Portugal, in the Department of Communication and Art, in 2018, and having the scientific guidance of Doctor António José Monteiro Amaro, Coordinating Professor of the School of Health of this University. The study represents a significant contribution to the field of music and instrumental performance, addressing a theme that is rarely explored in such detail: the influence of nasal breathing on trumpet performance. At the heart of this dissertation is the exploration of the interconnection between breathing technique and trumpet performance. João Miguel Pereira Milheiro conducted an in-depth research on the impacts of nasal breathing on the quality of musical interpretation. In doing so, he has shed light on an often underestimated but essential component of the trumpet playing process. One aspect that particularly raised awareness was to be mentioned in this master’s dissertation. The recognition given by the author João Milheiro in having chosen the composition “Royal Fanfarre” by Handel Cecilio as an integral part of his thesis, and thus having contributed to this study. This choice not only illustrates the link between theory and practice, but also underscores the emotional and personal connection that music can have with academics. The inclusion of Handel Cecilio’s composition “Royal Fanfarre” in the thesis also reinforces the interconnection between academic theory and artistic expression. This work will remain a relevant milestone in the study of music and instrumental performance.
