It is worth remembering that San Telmo and Montserrat were known as “the neighborhood of the blacks, the candombe and the drum”. In 1733 it was placed under the double invocation of the Archangel San Miguel and Nuestra Señora de los Remedios. In 1738, Matías Flores and his wife bought the chapel from the Hermandad de la Santísima Caridad. They restored it with the proper licenses from the bishop and placed it under the invocation of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. In 1740 the first baptisms were celebrated and in 1749 it was named Vice-parish of the Cathedral, being declared Parish 20 years later by Bishop Villasan. The church underwent modifications and its construction was completed in 1865. At present, the imposing temple occupies 17 meters wide by 63 meters long and the lateral naves have 4 chapels each one with its dome and altar. The dome of the central nave is 25 meters high. The Immaculate Conception has the first image of San Cayetano arrived in Buenos Aires, brought by Mamá Antula, María Antonia de Paz y Figueroa, beatified by Pope Francis.
The organ is one of the only two handcrafted organs in Argentina dating from 1868 and coming from Bergamo-Italy, built by the Fratelli Serassi family, an old and reputable Italian designer of this instrument. The ones in Europe were destroyed as a consequence of the world wars. The other organ of the same characteristics is in the parish of Monserrat. This organ is used throughout the year accompanying orchestral and choral companies, to which the Parish provides its presentation of sacred, renaissance and baroque works with free admission for the porteños who want to attend the respective programs.
