BIOGRAPHY
Organist, Harpsichordist (continuo) and Pianist. Born in Maceió (State of Alagoas, Brazil) in 1963. When he was ten years old, his family moved to Minas Gerais State. For Postgraduates (master degree and doctorate), from 2006 to 2014 he was divided between the cities of Belo Horizonte (MG) and Campinas (São Paulo). During his doctorate he moved to Portugal, where he was did part of his doctorate at the University of Coimbra.
He participated in several master classes conducted by a number of European organists. Outreach course on Spanish Baroque Organ Repertoire at Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais – UEMG (2004). Graduation in Piano from Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais – UEMG (2002-2004).
He started his postgraduate research in 2005, focusing on Pipe Organs from Colonial Brazil. Specialization degree in Brazilian Music from Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais – UEMG (2005-2006), where he concentrated on organ repertoire’s performance and performed the recital “Brazilian Composers for Organ”, including a world premiere of three of his own compositions for Organ.
Master’s Degree in Historical Musicology from Universidade Estadual de Campinas – UNICAMP (2007-2008), with the thesis “The eighteenth-century Pipe Organ at the Carmel Church in Diamantina: its enigmas and its close link to the Organ of Córregos”.
PhD of Music at UNICAMP (2009-2013), writing a dissertation on “The Art of Organística Benedictine monasteries in the Colonial and Imperial Brazil: theirs Pipe Organs, Organists e Organbuilthers”; under the guidance of Dr. Helena Jank.
He was CAPES scholarship and had done an internship Programa de Doutorado Sanduíche no Exterior – PDSE from 15th September 2011 till 30th september 2012 at University of Coimbra, in Portugal, under co-guidance of Dr. Maria do Rosário Barbosa Morujão.
He has carried out research on Iberian Organ Building and also attempted to preserve the history of the historical Brazilian Pipe Organs, which has led him to important discoveries and several related publications. Conceiver of the restoration project of the Colonial Pipe Organ at Carmo Church in Córregos (Municipality of Diamantina, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil), he carried out studies that showed both the importance and the quality of this Organ.
He has been currently spreading information on Pipe Organs in seminars, lectures and master classes. Author of compositions for Solo Organ as well as for Organ and Trumpets. His compositions have been performed in Brazil, United States of America and Europe. Regarding musical performance, he has performed as Titular Organist in several Churches since 1978, and has also performed in Organ concertos in Brazil and other countries.
He is professor at Minas Gerais Baptist University. In June 2001, he played an organ concert at Basilica of Sameiro in Braga (Portugal) and he gave a workshop about pipe organ registration for liturgy and some lectures about pipe organ.
He was organist at Chapel of Seminário Menor in Coimbra, and Almalaguês Parish, in Portugal. He and the Spanish trumpeter Basilio Gomarín Píriz formed the Duo Regia Symphonia Musicae, which focuses on Renaissance and Baroque repertoire, having its world première with a series of concerts in Spain, in September 2012.
Since July 2011, Handel Cecilio, with the organist Antônio Olimpio Nogueira, is coordinator of the organ concert series “Concerts in Lourdes”.
