Handel Cecílio performs and conducts workshop in organ registration Liturgical concert and training in the Basilica of Sameiro
Jorge Oliveira

The Brazilian organist Handel Cecílio will be at the Basilica of Sameiro next Sunday, June 12, for a liturgical concert and a training session in organ registration. This concert and training are part of the initiative “Music in the Sanctuary”, launched by the Confraternity of Our Lady of Sameiro with a view to musical dynamization and fundraising for the new organ, Allen, acquired for the basilica.

Handel Cecílio will perform in this concert, starting at 15h15, musical pieces by Gordon Young, Amaral Vieira, Domenio Zipoli, José Blasco de Nebra, Johann Sebastian Bach and his own authorship. At the end of the concert a piece for organ and trumpet will be performed with the participation of the Trumpet Class of the University of Minho directed by Professor Vasco Faria. It is the piece “Royal Fanfare”, composed by Handel Cecílio, and which was dedicated to the Brazilian royal family when one of the princes died in the crash of the Air France plane connecting Rio de Janeiro and Paris.

At 4:30 p.m., a Eucharist with organ accompaniment will be celebrated, after which the training in organ registration will begin. In the presentation of this event, Canon José Paulo Abreu, president of the Confraternity of Our Lady of Sameiro, emphasized the importance of this workshop for the musical quality in liturgies, as there are many organists who struggle to know how to register an organ, which means that, normally, the registration that is in the organ goes on all year round and serves for any moment of the Mass, for any type of piece.
